Program Offerings

We are offering several programs this season, including one that is eligible for high school credit.

Full-year programs:

Annual Championship Competition

Startup School

This is our OG program, where students form teams to build a mobile app from scratch and present it to a panel of judges. Teams will be evaluated on the following categories: Product, Design, Coding, Presentation and the all-elusive X-Factor. The winning team will be awarded the championship Glen Bussey Trophy.

Students may optionally receive credit for "Computer Science 11" from the province of British Columbia.

The program is open to students in grades 10 through 12, or students who have completed the GoA Intro to Programming Level 2 (previously called the Middle Years Intro to Coding 2). There are no prerequisites needed to enroll, but any prior coding, design or marketing experience may help with the competition.

The Design curriculum includes Elements of Design, Typography, Colours & Iconography, Basic UI Elements, Layouts & Compositions, User Flows & Storyboarding, Sketching, Wireframing & Prototyping and more.

The Development curriculum includes Variables & Data Types, Expressions & Operators, Control Flow: If/Else Statements, Logical Operators, Strings, Loops, Arrays and more.

The Business curriculum includes Market Segmentation, SWOT Analysis and more, all from a Technology industry perspective.

Students will require access to a Windows or Mac computer, preferably no older than 5 years old.

This is a full-year, 22-week, program, and students meet weekly, Tuesdays from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

Introduction to Programming Level 1

The Introduction to Programming Level 1 program is for students in grades 6 through 9 who have never taken Game of Apps.

Learn the basics of coding using the Swift programming language. Students will go through the Learn To Code I course from Apple. Students will require access to an iPad or a Mac computer, preferably no older than 5 years old. This is a full-year, 19-week, program.

The curriculum includes Commands, Functions, For Loops, Conditional Code, Logical Operators, While Loops, Algorithms and more.

This is a full-year, 19-week program. The students meet weekly, Thursdays from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Introduction to Programming Level 2

The Introduction to Programming Level 2 program is for students in grades 7 through 9 who have completed the Game of Apps Introduction to Programming Level 1 program.

This program builds on top of what students learned in the level 1 program, using the Swift programming language. Students will go through the Learn To Code II course from Apple. Students will require access to an iPad or a Mac computer, preferably no older than 5 years old. This is a full-year, 19-week, program.

The curriculum includes Variables, Types, Initialization, Parameters, Arrays and more.

Get Started with Machine Learning

The Get Started with Machine Learning program is a standalone module that may be taken on its own or in conjunction with one of the full year programs.

In this module, students will be introduced to Machine Learning and AI by working on a project that uses computer vision to recognize hand gestures. Students will use this technology to build a Rock, Paper, Scissors game where the user can indicate their move using their hand.

The students meet for 4 weeks, Wednesdays from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Code Machine

The Code Machine program is a standalone module that may be taken on its own or in conjunction with one of the full year programs.

In this module, students will build a Code Machine that can combine different items to create new items. In the process, students will be introduced to a few coding concepts such as Functions, Arguments and Loops through a fun and interactive project.

The students meet for 4 weeks, Wednesdays from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Choose Your Own Story

The Choose Your Own Story program is a standalone module that may be taken on its own or in conjunction with one of the full year programs.

In this module, students will exercise their creative writing skills to write two stories--a linear short story similar to what you might find in a book, and a story where the reader's choices results in the story taking different paths, and each reading might take the reader through a different journey. In the process, students will be introduced to the Swift programming language and various digital skills through a fun and interactive project.

The students meet for 4 weeks, Wednesdays from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Sonic Workshop

The Sonic Workshop program is a standalone module that may be taken on its own or in conjunction with one of the full year programs. It is recommended that students have completed one of the GoA full year programs (Introduction to Programming 1 or 2, or Startup program).

In this module, students will write and perform their own song using a number of instruments, rhythms and loops. In the process, students will be introduced to a few coding concepts such as Functions, Reusability and Composability through a fun and interactive project.

The students meet for 4 weeks, Wednesdays from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

Meme Creator

The Meme Creator program is a standalone module that may be taken on its own or in conjunction with one of the full year programs. It is recommended that students have completed one of the GoA full year programs (Introduction to Programming 1 or 2, or Startup program).

In this module, students will create an app that generates memes. In the process, students will be introduced to JSON encoding, Data Modelling, fetching data from a remote server asynchronously, and Error Handling through a fun and interactive project.

The students meet for 4 weeks, Wednesdays from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

Battleship

The Battleship program is a standalone module that may be taken on its own or in conjunction with one of the full year programs. It is recommended that students have completed one of the GoA full year programs (Introduction to Programming 1 or 2, or Startup program).

In this module, students will create a Battleship game app. In the process, students will come up with their own algorithm for the game AI and will analyze the pros and cons for various algorithm approaches. Optionally, students may also pit their own game AI with those of other students.

The students meet for 4 weeks, Wednesdays from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

Swift Student Challenge

This Swift Student Challenge program is for advanced students and is by invitation only. Students must have completed two of the full-year programs.
